| Federation of State Medical Boards Recognizes Electronic Health Records Can Assist Physicians in Assessing Ongoing Clinical Competence for Licensure |
The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) announced today that it recognizes widespread adoption of electronic health records could be used by doctors to both improve patient outcomes and assess ongoing clinical competence for purposes of medical licensure. The FSMB made the announcement at the "Advancing Electronic Health Records Adoption and Meaningful Use" forum hosted by the Health Industry Forum of Brandeis University and Health Affairs. Read more.

| New Directors Elected To FSMB Foundation Board |
The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) Board of Directors elected two Directors to the FSMB Foundation Board during the FSMB board's July meeting. The newest Director is Timothy J. Turner, a public member of the Texas Medical Board. He was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry in 2003 and again in 2009 for an additional six-year term. The FSMB Board re-elected Hedy L. Chang, who was originally elected to the Foundation Board of Directors in February 2010 to complete the term vacated by Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A, when she became U.S. Surgeon General. Read more.

| Humayun J. Chaudhry, D.O., to be FSMB's New President and CEO |
The Federation of State Medical Boards announced that Humayun J. Chaudhry, D.O., M.S., FACP, FACOI, has been named its new President and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Chaudhry will assume leadership of the FSMB in October. Dr. Chaudhry was formerly Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Suffolk County, N.Y., Department of Health Services, the ninth largest health department in the United States, and brings extensive experience as a physician, medical educator, and health policy leader. | Senate Committee Approves Nomination of Regina Benjamin, M.D., as Surgeon General |
The Senate Health Committee on Oct. 7 unanimously approved the nomination of FSMB Immediate Past Chair Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., as the next U.S. surgeon general. Dr. Benjamin's nomination will now go to the full Senate for a final confirmation vote. She has been active in the medical regulatory community for more than 20 years, serving on the FSMB's board of directors and on the Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners. |
